NatureGrounds®

PlayCore and the Natural Learning Initiative, College of Design, at NC State University, developed NatureGrounds,® a program that helps children reconnect with nature through play. It is founded on a growing body of research that identifies a strong link between children’s outdoor experiences in nature and their psychological well-being and overall development.

Topics covered in the program include:

• Integrating manufactured play elements with living landscapes
• Planting pockets and phased naturalization
• Planting principles for playgrounds
• New construction and retrofit

NatureGrounds provides guidelines for creating and retrofitting play environments that integrate play equipment, natural components and the living landscape to provide a richer, sustainable play experience for children.
